CWiMI - Centre for Water in the Minerals Industry SMI Knowledge Exchange

The Centre for Water in the Minerals Industry (CWiMI) facilitates the capture of benefits from opportunities associated with sustainable water management in the minerals industry. The Centre aims to achieve this by conducting systems science and engineering research; working with industry and government to facilitate adoption and technology transfer; and establishing, maintaining and providing access to a repository of knowledge.

CWiMI has competencies in water policy, simulation modeling of physical systems (eg. water reuse), and combining these with economic flows (eg. simulation of water trading markets and buyer/seller behaviours). The Centre is also working on understanding practical constraints to water reuse ensuring that moves to save fresh water are balanced by pragmatic understanding of the additional consequences of concentration of contaminants and the need for their disposal.

CWiMI is led by Professor Damian Barrett.

Numerical Analysis of Water Balances is an effective way to improve water management.

Water Reuse, with treatment, is a rational economic approach to meet water demands.

Frugal Water Use, giving water savings, will only be possible with technical improvements.

Closure Management requires an ecosystems approach with water being integral.

Full Values of Water must be understood to achieve sustainable development goals.
